On July 1st of 2020, the Wall Street Exchange Committee hosted its 3rd virtual session with Michelle Harlan (WSE Co-Chair) as the Master of Ceremonies and Hermina (“Nina”) Batson, President-Elect, as the Moderator. We were fortunate to have 90 interns
in attendance for the informative event that was sponsored by MUFG (a President’s Circle firm).
MUFG was represented by Lahna Rae (“Laine“) Harper who is a Commodity Finance Portfolio Manager and Mathias Roberts who is a Corporate Communication Assistant Vice President. They provided a real-life perspective on being summer interns in financial institutions.
With candid responses and feedback to questions from the participants, it was clear the group received several tips on good behaviors to have a successful internship. There were also frank conversations about dealing with challenges as a summer intern
in a normal situation and particularly during the pandemic with internships being virtual.
Below are six useful rules for email etiquette that were discussed during the session and are applicable at any stage in your career.
Rule # 1 – Don’t put it in writing unless it’s factual. Rule # 2 – Don’t disclose personal information. Rule # 3 – People at work are not your friends. Rule # 4 – Don’t email like you text! Rule # 5 – Email to yourself a report or crucial
reply first and re-read it or if you have time, let someone else review it and give you feedback. Rule # 6 – If you have questions, try calling someone or scheduling time to talk things through. However, if they are unreachable or unavailable,
follow up with an email. It helps keep a paper trail and alleviates confusion and misunderstandings.
Thank you to MUFG for their continued support of the WSE Committee.
