Why was the FWA founded and what is its mission?

The FWA was founded in 1956, at a time when women were rarely accepted in finance roles. Women on Wall Street founded the organization to support one another’s careers. Our mission is to accelerate the leadership and success of women in finance by providing programs, community, and opportunities that open doors and pave the way forward.

What makes the FWA different from other women’s or finance organizations?

With nearly 70 years of history, our track record of mentorship, scholarships, leadership development, and thought leadership sets us apart. Unlike general finance associations or broad women’s groups, the FWA sits at the intersection of both: advancing women within finance.

Is it worthwhile to join a professional association like the FWA?

Yes. Professional associations give you access to networks, opportunities, and resources you can’t find on your own. The FWA also provides credibility, visibility, and a platform to grow both personally and professionally. Many members have reported finding new jobs, advancing in their careers and making lifelong friends.

Why join a women’s organization instead of a general finance association?

Women’s organizations provide something unique: community with peers who understand what it’s like to be the only woman in the room. The FWA offers not just technical knowledge, but a safe and supportive space to share experiences, get advice, and celebrate success together. At the same time, our membership is open to all and includes allies who serve in committees, on our board, and support our community.

Can I be part of both the FWA and other professional groups?

Absolutely. Many of our members belong to both the FWA and other finance or industry associations. The FWA complements those memberships by providing women-focused programs, advocacy, and support.
