Committee of the Month - Pacesetters

Meet Amy Hertenstein and Marian Olah, Co-Chairs of the Pacesetters Program and learn about their contributions to the FWA and how you can get involved:
Membership: What is the Pacesetters Program and what do you do?
Amy and Marian: ‘We are responsible for running the ‘Pacesetter Program’ which was launched 5 years ago as a highly-coveted year-long leadership development program for our President Circle Firms.
Each year, our sponsor firms recognize high potential women, “Female Rising Stars” within their organization by selecting them to join this unique program. We are very proud to have the largest class this year with 23 Pacesetters who receive monthly leadership development sessions and networking opportunities. In addition, all participants receive a formal mentor and executive coach throughout the program and are recognized at our traditional Annual Awards Ceremony signature event’.
Membership: How did you both come to lead the Pacesetters Committee?
Amy: ‘I joined and learned about the FWA as a Pacesetter myself in 2016 when I was working for BMO Capital Markets. While on the program, I came to understand the benefits of getting more involved with the FWA and volunteered as a mentor for the FWA Baruch Mentorship Program. I can’t believe I’m in my 4th year doing this!
From a personal perspective, I found comradery through this program and gained skills I had not realized I needed. The program helped me develop personally and get out of my shell, which was critical to my own career growth. Now it’s my opportunity to give back to the program and a natural progression to further strengthen my leadership skills’.
Marian: ‘I officially joined the FWA two years ago and had been involved since 2016. I provided training sessions on ‘Color Q,’ a personality type framework used to develop leadership and communication skills, to various groups, including the Pacesetters.
Given my experience and familiarity with the Pacesetters and my knowledge of the FWA as an organization, I was asked by my predecessor, Gerri Bostick, to become Co-Chair of this Program which also felt like a natural progression’.
Membership: What are the top 3 benefits of joining the Pacesetters Committee?
- Mentoring: as part of the program, our Pacesetters are paired with mentors who come to our sessions year-round and share advice that you can receive, too!
- Leadership opportunity within a non-profit organization: this program is a unique offering to the FWA’s sponsor firms. As such, you get opportunities to lead by joining an FWA committee and coordinating events which serving the organization’s mission towards advancing women.
- Networking: by joining the FWA and supporting our needs (particularly in terms of scheduling and coordination) you have many opportunities to connect with the rising stars and senior representatives of our sponsor firms. It feels like a community within a community within the FWA membership.
Membership: Based on your experience being involved with the FWA: if you had to give one piece of advice to our members, what would that be?
Amy: ‘Get involved because you will get as much as you put in’.
Marian: ‘Don’t be afraid to step up! Even though my specialization is outside of finance, I have always been very focused in my work on the growth and development of women and found common ground with the FWA that way’.
