FWA Response to COVID-19
Fear makes us feel our humanity.” – Benjamin Disraeli
Dear FWA Members, Sponsors and Friends,
| Simone Vinocour
FWA President 2019-2020
As you know, the situation regarding the response to the coronavirus here in New York and nationwide is evolving rapidly. It is affecting each of us both personally and professionally. Since these are unprecedented times in our country and our industry, I did not want to delay in reaching out to you.
In keeping with the government's current virus protocols, I have called for the postponement of all FWA in-person meetings and activities in New York City until further notice. At the discretion of the FWA Leadership, some smaller events outside of New York may continue to be held.
In addition to our planned programming and committee events, the FWA will also postpone its two remaining signature events: the Summit scheduled for May 12th and the Annual Awards Ceremony scheduled for early June - until hopefully the Fall. I am working with the FWA’s key sponsors of those events, to determine new dates. I anticipate that I will not have any additional clarity for at least another three weeks. The FWA’s Annual Meeting of Members is currently scheduled for June 22nd. We will continue to monitor the situation in the likely case we cannot meet in person for this important meeting.
While this action is necessary to protect our supporters, members, colleagues, and families, we recognize the role the FWA plays in advancing women in finance – you! We are looking at ways to be creative in adjusting programming to keep our members engaged and connected. For example, we were thrilled to launch our first podcast on Monday, in celebration of International Women’s Day. We will look for innovative ways to bring programming to our constituents so that we continue to deliver the education, mentoring, and professional content that has made the FWA the amazing organization it is!
1) The World
Although my previous letters have covered COVID-19 and the turmoil in the oil markets, I, for one, did not anticipate the extent of their impact. COVID-19 is affecting global financial markets and goverments, and the Fed and Central Banks are responding! With the rapid announcements coming from officials, anything I write now is likely to be outdated by the time you read this.
2) The FWA
In response to COVID-19, our Executive Director, Ria Davis, and her team will be telecommuting during this time. She and the team will continue to support the FWA with dedication and diligence.
Please continue to check back on the FWA’s website for updates to our programming schedule, especially as we look to release more digital content.
I recognize that each of us is affected by this situation in various ways: concern for ourselves or a family member’s health, added complexity around working remotely, welcoming back a college student a bit prematurely, or arranging child-care with school closures. I agree with Disraeli that we begin to feel our humanity and that of others during times of fear.
In addition to following the health-related protocols, take some time to reach out and send a note of thanks to healthcare providers, teachers, and managers who are working overtime to implement solutions to weather this storm. And weather it, we will!
Please know that you and your families are in my thoughts and that I am grateful for your support today and always!
