Hello Isha and welcome to the FWA! Please tell us about your FWA journey so far.

I joined the FWA this past August after doing some research online: I had just come out of an interview with a financial services company which left me convinced that women still had a long way to go and needed to continue supporting one another.

I went on the internet to seek organizations for women in finance and came across the FWA. When I went through the site, learned more about the events and benefits of membership, I decided to sign up because I wanted to be part of a cause.

So far, I have really enjoyed meeting with members at FWA events and sharing thoughts about the industry and learning from members who are more established career-wise. I also lead Programming for the Membership Committee which I am very excited about.

Tell us about your career so far.

I graduated last summer from Queens College and received a BA in Economics and Business Administration. Currently I am working at SS&C Technologies which is a small firm providing investment management and software services to financial services companies.

As a small firm (and the only woman in my team!), I am learning to be very entrepreneurial and my focus is fund accounting. This role allows me to connect directly with our clients and work with Private Equity Funds and I am learning a lot so far!

How did you find this position?

While in College, I was an active member of the largest Pan-Asian non-profit across North America, Ascend. As a student, I worked on the ‘Ascend Executive Insight’ series which was published every 2 months and featured an interview of professors and included tips on how to network and interview. I met a mentor through Ascend who recommended me for my current job at SC&C Technologies. The rest is history!

What is the best career advice you have received so far?

One of my mentors said to not treat anything like it’s the end of the world. You might mess up or underperform and let yourself down but ‘beating yourself up’ about it makes it a lot worse than you think it is. He told me to remember that we’re all human and should be kind to ourselves.

What are you passionate about?

My passion is all about empowering women. I was born and raised in India until the age of 13. I co- founded a non-profit community center (called Vishwanath Memorial Gram Vikas Sansthan) with my brother and grandfather which aims to provide skills-based training and microloans to women.

Who is a source of inspiration and strength in your life and why?

A source of inspiration and strength in my life has always been my parents and family. They have always been supportive of me even when I didn’t really know what I wanted and gave me time to figure it out myself.

What are the words you live by?

Life is a marathon, not a sprint.

Do you have any book to recommend our FWA community?

Right now I am reading ‘Push’ by Sapphire which was translated into the movie ‘Precious’. What I like most about this book is the authenticity and just how different of a read it is. The book is written in such a way that really sucks the reader in and makes it a very immersive read.
