Gen. Maryanne MillerGeneral Maryanne Miller
Commander, Air Mobility Command
Scott Air Force Base, Illinois

General Maryanne Miller, the highest-ranking woman in defense, commands a $15 billion enterprise responsible for airlift, aerial refueling, aeromedical evacuation and contingency response in support of global operations. From C 17s flying wounded Americans home from combat, to KC 135s refueling U.S. and Coalition fighters delivering a knockout blow to ISIS, to C-130s providing humanitarian aid in the wake of a devastating Caribbean hurricane. As commander of a 110,000-strong global air mobility organization with approximately 1,100 aircraft, General Miller is presently focused on transforming Air Mobility Command’s structure and operational processes to more effectively address emerging great power competition threats as identified in the National Defense Strategy.

A hall-of-fame athlete and native of Hilliard, Ohio, General Miller was a distinguished graduate and scholarship athlete from Ohio State University prior to joining the Air Force in 1981 and being selected as one of ten female USAF pilot candidates that year. From her first flight as a college junior at OSU’s Don Scott Airfield to flying the nation’s largest military aircraft into Baghdad during combat operations, General Miller has accumulated over 4,800 flight hours in eight different military aircraft. Rising through the active duty and Reserve ranks, she had led Airmen at all levels, from group to wing to commanding the U.S. Air Force Reserve Command’s 80,000 Airmen prior to becoming the first Reserve Officer in history to attain the rank of four-star general. General Miller is also the first female military pilot to make general and is presently the only female four-star general in the Department of Defense.

A servant leader in every regard, General Miller’s military journey is unique among leaders. After initially serving seven years on active duty, she transitioned into the Air Force Reserves and worked full time for Washington State Department of Fisheries, piloting a de Havilland Beaver seaplane into remote waterways to help apprehend poachers. She has also been a business entrepreneur, owning and managing the Our Place restaurant in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, serving meals to everyone locals, tourists and even visiting Defense secretaries including Leon Panetta and Donald Rumsfeld.

When her duty day ends, General Miller continues to serve others. A longstanding and devout volunteer in Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity, she helps feed and clothe the poorest of poor across the nation and world at every opportunity. When she visits New York City in early November, her first stop within an hour of arriving will be to serve meals to the poor in Harlem. Both in and out of uniform, General Miller espouses servant leadership, putting the needs and concerns of her Airmen and the poor before her own.
