A Conversation with SEC Chairman, Mary Schapiro
|
The Financial Women’s Association Government Affairs Committee sponsored “A Conversation with Securities Exchange Commission Chairman, Mary Schapiro on Monday June 14th at the New York Law School. Ms Schapiro, former FWA Public Sector Woman of Year, sat down with Maria Bartiromo of CNBC for a rare, casual conversation before 300 people at the lower Manhattan Law School.
In a wide ranging conversation that was particularly enjoyable due to the spontaneous nature of the questions from Ms. Bartiromo and from the audience, Ms. Schapiro noted the difficulty her agency has in regulating its approximately 30,000 entities with the current funding and staffing levels – the SEC has only 3,700 staffers, much fewer than that perform the day to day regulation. In response to a question from the audience, Ms. Schapiro provided some advice for young women. She implored them to become an expert in whatever they’re doing, become the go to person in their department. There was a light moment in the proceedings when an audience member queried Ms. Schapiro about Michael Lewis’s recent book, the Big Short which cast a harsh light on the banks and the regulators. Ms Schapiro grinned widely saying that it was a good book.
The event marks the second female regulatory chairman to speak at an FWA hosted event in the last 15 months. In March 2009, Sheila C. Bair, the acclaimed Chairman of the FDIC, spoke at the FWA annual dinner.
