FWA’s International Committee presents Dr. Mark Schaffer, proprietor of A La Vieille Russie on Fifth Avenue, his family’s antiques business, established in Kiev more than a century ago. Dr. Schaffer will comment on some of his establishment’s many Russian items of cultural and historical significance. They include works of art beautifully crafted by the famous shop of Faberge for the Russian nobility and royal family; portraits of the nobility or royal family and paintings once belonging to them; empire style furniture of early nineteenth-century palaces.
The collection showcases Russia’s wealth, its owners, their tastes and life styles. This glimpse into Russia will prepare trip participants for the breathtaking luxury they will encounter in Russia, particularly in its palaces and museums.
Dr. Schaffer is a connoisseur of exquisite Russian antiques and works of art. During its many years, the firm helped assemble the Forbes collection as well as many other important collections.
