Mission - Overview Goals

The goal of the FWA Men's Alliance is to provide a forum that fosters genuine dialog between men and women in business, with particular emphasis on concerns regarding financial related industries, and with a focus on advancement and to promote cross-gender networking.

The Men's Alliance plans to sponsor fun events and substantive forums that: connect men and women on a professional level; broaden leadership diversity in organizations; educate men and women on how to work together more effectively; and focus participants on acting as change agents for women's and men's leadership.

Committee Description

The FWA Men's Alliance initiative began in 2010 as a test group and was recently constituted a full FWA Committee. The Committee hosted its inaugural event, "Single Malt Chocolate" in February of 2011.

The Men's Alliance Committee hosts several educational and networking events during the year. The Committee meets once a month (a call-in number is provided for those who can't attend in person). The amount of commitment depends on the member's desire to serve in an ongoing role or as part of a sub-team for a specific event. Available roles include Event Planning, Marketing, Press/Social Media, Registration Desk, Greeters and Photography.

Message from the Co-chairs

As a decade long member of the FWA, I noticed that 80% of the events had nothing to do with gender, and for the remaining 20%, why weren't the men there so that we could hear from them? By having the Men's Alliance, we have provided the perfect forum for men and women to share their views and learn from each other, as well as to promote business growth and personal growth for both men and women. - Deborah Kaye

I am sure that I speak for my co-chairs, Deborah Kaye and Freddy Smith, when I say that I am very committed to supporting FWA members to develop strong personal and professional relationships within the FWA community. I am also very enthusiastic about promoting the female members in particular to overcome any professional career development hurdles that they face. I enjoy working with the entire Men's Alliance Committee members in producing and conducting our events, and truly appreciate the teamwork and camaraderie that we have developed to date. - Charles Bernard

Insecure men need not apply! - Freddy Smith

Highlights from Recent Events

The inaugural event for the Men's Alliance, Single Malt Scotch, was a scotch and chocolate tasting event held in February 2011. The event quickly sold out, with 177 attendees and tasting advice from Vosges Chocolate and The Macallan. The event was hosted by Debevoise & Plimpton LLC, which provided wonderful food and atmosphere for the kick-off event.

Guiding Your Kids Careers/Color Q was held on April 20, 2011 and was also sold out. The event was co-sponsored by the Men's Alliance Committee and the BNY Mellon Women's Initiative Network. This event included more than 70 BNY Mellon employees, FWA members, and their children, age 16 through college, for an interactive session on "Guiding Your Kids' Careers: How Knowing Your Personality Style Impacts Achievement, Success and Relationships." A networking reception followed the workshop.

The Fearless Salesperson, which took place on May 25, 2011, also sold out. This event included a panel discussion exploring successful sales and networking techniques, and how these may differ across genders from the perspective of buyers and sellers. The event was hosted by Weil, Gotshal & Manges and food provided by Paul Neuman's Catering.

Success Stories

All 3 of the Committee's events have sold out. The Committee has quickly become a high profile initiative within FWA and has garnered a great deal of positive press.

In addition, the Committee's 30 members include 10 male members, two of whom, Charles Bernard and Freddy Smith, are Co-Chairs. The Committee has attracted a good deal of interest among men in the financial industry who wondered "where is MY networking group? Or "I've never really thought about the gender issues involved in that area" or "I loved the FWA but I never felt I had a voice in it, until now."

As a new male member of the FWA, I felt very welcomed. The members have been extremely friendly, and the events well organized. I loved the beautiful set up of Single Malt Chocolate. I will be happy to continue to attend the FWA events. - Steve Honig
