xJoanne Landau
, president, Kurtsam Realty, spoke on a panel on Women and Corporate Boards in the general session of the annual New Jersey Association of Women Business Owners (NJAWBO) held on May 8th, in Long Branch, New Jersey.  The two other panelists were Gail Lieberman, another FWA member, and Linda Schmidt, a TIAW (International Alliance for Women).

The FWA is extremely proud to report that Roberta Karmel has been named by the American Bar Association Commission on Women in the Profession as a recipient of its Margaret Brent Women Lawyers of Achievement Award. The Award was named for Margaret Brent (1601-1671), the first woman lawyer in America. The FWA Board wrote a letter in support of her nomination by the Business Law Section of the ABA.

Except for her years as an SEC Commissioner, where she was the first woman to hold the position, Roberta Karmel's professional life has been on Wall Street where she has put down deep roots in the New York business community. Roberta, as far as we know, was the first woman to build a significant "Wall Street" law practice of her own and the first woman to sit on the management committee of a major New York law firm. Her clients included most of the major Wall Street houses. Likewise, she was the first woman to sit on the boards of a number of companies as well as the first woman to sit on the board of the New York Stock Exchange. She is currently Centennial Professor of Law at Brooklyn Law School.

The award will be presented at a luncheon on Sunday, August 10 at the Sheraton New York. Details are available at www.abanet.org/women/awards.html.
